Function, Meet Fashion
What’s in my bag, Mountainfilm takeaways, what's going on with that knee? and what I’m wearing in the outdoors this spring/summer
Hello friends!
I writing to you thoroughly exhausted and exceptionally inspired, through bleary eyes rubbed-raw after crying through a weekend of amazing films at Mountainfilm.
I saw some life changing documentaries this year. And while I always cry at everything, this year I left feeling more hopeful than anything else.
The resounding themes were kindness, compassion, loving, and the power of listening. It was really clear to me in this concentration of stories of all subject matters, through talking to people about films resonated with them, that we are all pining for the same things. We are collectively reaching out for kindness and craving compassion. I saw beautiful stories about people who have changed their minds (!!), devoted their lives to listening, and gave love out in abundance. My heart broke wide open and was filled back up with hope. And I was reminded of what a scarcity that is these days. Because sometimes I confuse hope for something more like the numbness that comes from forgetting about the atrocities in the world for a moment. But really, it’s a more whole and dynamic emotion where you acknowledge the bad, and in the same thought feel something sparkling for it’s future.
And I have the privilege of falling asleep safely in my bed at night being able to feel hopeful, which I am very aware is just that- such privilege. Reemerging back into the world reminded that there are so many good people in it is a gift.
From everything I’ve learned about our community who reads these letters, I know that we have such interesting and dynamic people here. Folks who are multifaceted and do a lot of good in the world while giving themselves space to search for what brings them joy. People who explore their hobbies and interests and don’t let themselves be put them in a box.
I’ve got to admit, writing a letter about fashion after an experience like that, in conjunction with the state of the world, feels… what’s a word for something exceptionally meaningless? But I’m reminded to take my own advice which is to give time to the things that bring you joy and fill you up so you can tackle the bigger problems with a full tank. This does bring me joy. Fashion and styling and art direction at large stoke me up. But if you don’t hear from me one day it will because I sold everything to join the peace corp. I did have this idea to wear the same outfit everyday for a year in protest of fast fashion. I’ll mull that one over, but until then let’s keep playing with the clothes we do have and finding joy in the little things.
First, what’s in my bag?
1.) Hand cream I picked up in Paris from Officine Universelle Buly 2.) Cloud Compact chapstick from Fluff, basically a little refillable piece of art 3.) Olympus Superzoom 160 film cam 4.) Japanese playing cards 5.) Comb with my name on it, also from Officine Universelle Buly 6.) Poppy Lissiman sunnies 7.) Finishing salt for when food is inherently under seasoned 8.) Lemon Mint Ricola, the best flavor 9.) Beloved Stabilo pen
Not pictured: ten thousand sticky notes with to-do lists, a couple bucks, french cigarettes (I don’t smoke but I liked the vibe), not my keys because they’re lost, and always a handful of dog treats.
Things are blooming down here in Southwestern Colorado! The tulips are tuliping!
Because it *actually* finally feels like spring, I’m giving myself some seasonally specific advice for moving gently out of winter and into the next seasons.

So here are some warmer weather things I’ll be donning in the outdoors during this magical emergence:
